This can be handy for basic hygiene when out in the Bush.</p><p>Two of the more commonly found ones are horse chestnut and soapwort.</p><p>Horse chestnuts ( we call them conkers) contain a lot of saponins, crush them up, and add to soft water and leave for 24 hours, the result is a good soapy liquid </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgZZPS889aP_Z58KbjV7OSpjMw1kO3_wA2jfMqpI51omYA2mfPs7vnwmxxlsonU-4dI5V-VXMfCzDf8d2tDz3bYEdjprYPLA8WaQkRFFGQ-C9CAKRqHdj6E9H3rwm-W8kAAJAdwTTMT1Bf0bi9QxUpdkzkMLHBMTiBSN7hPvNSJo5AWEQU9lltfqlL8YE/s2834/20231013_203233.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2232" data-original-width="2834" height="252" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgZZPS889aP_Z58KbjV7OSpjMw1kO3_wA2jfMqpI51omYA2mfPs7vnwmxxlsonU-4dI5V-VXMfCzDf8d2tDz3bYEdjprYPLA8WaQkRFFGQ-C9CAKRqHdj6E9H3rwm-W8kAAJAdwTTMT1Bf0bi9QxUpdkzkMLHBMTiBSN7hPvNSJo5AWEQU9lltfqlL8YE/s320/20231013_203233.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div><br /></div>Discard after 3 days or it will start to ferment and smell pretty bad, this obviously defeats the purpose of the whole idea.<div><br /></div><div>Soapwort, as the name suggests is good too,</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDmWxavVymoMtnQnJ-Sl__TGjQ8j2SvB_HWjReO17pk2rVqiiWXMqbdiLEOo-oi2R_PmkqF8D-vIbL3LJOZZ1Atly5fSu75BNEXboQXKtZ4Y-YZBp6mn2EM0Qa652NAEyX7-_Nzh9JQ8M0Lzi5sc-af8ZuPGjXfmRyddc4ISX82SjFUIUpjPrZGtFgqFs/s4032/20231013_203502.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="2268" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDmWxavVymoMtnQnJ-Sl__TGjQ8j2SvB_HWjReO17pk2rVqiiWXMqbdiLEOo-oi2R_PmkqF8D-vIbL3LJOZZ1Atly5fSu75BNEXboQXKtZ4Y-YZBp6mn2EM0Qa652NAEyX7-_Nzh9JQ8M0Lzi5sc-af8ZuPGjXfmRyddc4ISX82SjFUIUpjPrZGtFgqFs/s320/20231013_203502.jpg" width="180" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">It aslo produces plenty of suds but to be honest, horse chestnut is better, again discard after 3 days or it begins to smell like mushy peas! </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><div><br /><p><br /></p></div>Buzzardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00891804910073663628noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2919321743293401144.post-56240367233968325902023-08-26T03:31:00.000-07:002023-08-26T03:31:08.284-07:00Proof that God exists<p> So many people deride and mock the idea, but I defy anyone to spend time outdoors and genuinely study creation and not see the hand of the creator in nature, the mere existence of the variety and complexity of life calls out that there is a God.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAiPN24GjzLp09A0RpzflCkkkGT8L3EufSvkY_kGRV9IvlOR7sjqn_uZ_Ir2pPQhJMhvrFFmVZi-L5617vSSAOgrURoNSfDCnkND1L7qJDCMPtd2-kHrGgaq1jb7duI5EdNeBxJUbgVjWmsuFZZe5Yi3AhFYBh3ncikhfk-rY3f_wmDFchWIDyae-5nlc/s1032/Screenshot_20230826_112548_Samsung%20Internet.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1032" data-original-width="918" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAiPN24GjzLp09A0RpzflCkkkGT8L3EufSvkY_kGRV9IvlOR7sjqn_uZ_Ir2pPQhJMhvrFFmVZi-L5617vSSAOgrURoNSfDCnkND1L7qJDCMPtd2-kHrGgaq1jb7duI5EdNeBxJUbgVjWmsuFZZe5Yi3AhFYBh3ncikhfk-rY3f_wmDFchWIDyae-5nlc/s320/Screenshot_20230826_112548_Samsung%20Internet.jpg" width="285" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p>Buzzardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00891804910073663628noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2919321743293401144.post-35479050523179000252023-08-13T11:46:00.002-07:002023-08-14T00:45:15.079-07:00Poison Hemlock in Northern Ireland<p> It's not as common here as it is in the rest of the UK but it can be quite abundant in the areas where it is found.</p><p>Probably one of the 3 most toxic plants in Northern Europe and the plant Socrates was said to have ingested. Once you know a little about umbellifers it's quite easy to recognise. It has been said in times past for the root to be made into a porridge and used in the treatment of lunatics! </p><p>It contains a neurotoxin which will stop your heart and breathing and is said to be quite a painful death, study the pictures below carefully and never eat any plant you're not 100 per cent sure of.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; There are a number of caterpillars that can do this including various species of ermine moth and hawthorn moth caterpillars. </p><p>Its an incredible sight to see and I've seen miles of hawthorn stripped by these little monsters, however it's part of the creation cycle and the hawthorn will replenish.</p><p><br /></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjykgQIryuhlj2EUwwFUcZR98B5ijQ7dWNK6s6UoE1Yygqw-VNQYldq11pzdjnvmIN0MzgvPnnpVYVaAIB9EH67WZgEg9xD722zdGczUym3N_n8PaDr3m-FKNcZdPu0xL2uEtPGSUfWkoYkEC4ChextyQ7VXdkQQKEXyn3Wfh5dER8jkOdyh-alM9bf/s4032/20230610_103308.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2268" data-original-width="4032" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjykgQIryuhlj2EUwwFUcZR98B5ijQ7dWNK6s6UoE1Yygqw-VNQYldq11pzdjnvmIN0MzgvPnnpVYVaAIB9EH67WZgEg9xD722zdGczUym3N_n8PaDr3m-FKNcZdPu0xL2uEtPGSUfWkoYkEC4ChextyQ7VXdkQQKEXyn3Wfh5dER8jkOdyh-alM9bf/s320/20230610_103308.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFg1nv5pRIi41Yuiynxa2YIt_fQkQeCEJ0kjUwMMkhem_h6uP7oS6IzewcePG1XEnfabJWgMrbZabUwtRNzVOr1BWQVwXQvXA3a01mHT1_DeyQkAYcUqV5FWeE7nqziQBmDu1jay1kzfhfP_U7czJAhjJ-HCyfNwmdXqad8Ih9pLxSzoNEz6htI6XZ/s4032/20230610_103322.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2268" data-original-width="4032" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFg1nv5pRIi41Yuiynxa2YIt_fQkQeCEJ0kjUwMMkhem_h6uP7oS6IzewcePG1XEnfabJWgMrbZabUwtRNzVOr1BWQVwXQvXA3a01mHT1_DeyQkAYcUqV5FWeE7nqziQBmDu1jay1kzfhfP_U7czJAhjJ-HCyfNwmdXqad8Ih9pLxSzoNEz6htI6XZ/s320/20230610_103322.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /> <p></p>Buzzardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00891804910073663628noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2919321743293401144.post-59482130032238489232023-05-28T10:11:00.003-07:002023-05-28T10:16:58.998-07:00Lichen dyeing - xanthoria sp.<p> Thought you might like to see the result of one of the lichen species we've been working with lately</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkEOCacJTZNM2qKdaag9czrPp2m-sMPlnDBoL8oBO-oxixhHfzgOnfIlqzxZiL5TVMnvR8GTW1dU3PdhuEo_FX6nu4PgP_tAwmBArAK_dHSKG5YW4W7WJZHtXOB8FfcRjTAo-yyJodXvcE_gX4me9yugfFOIBjq7UV8RKraSHoxrhSIFSCRTLOrMhO/s4032/20230527_152257.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="2268" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkEOCacJTZNM2qKdaag9czrPp2m-sMPlnDBoL8oBO-oxixhHfzgOnfIlqzxZiL5TVMnvR8GTW1dU3PdhuEo_FX6nu4PgP_tAwmBArAK_dHSKG5YW4W7WJZHtXOB8FfcRjTAo-yyJodXvcE_gX4me9yugfFOIBjq7UV8RKraSHoxrhSIFSCRTLOrMhO/s320/20230527_152257.jpg" width="180" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">This jar has been fermenting from September last year and is just about ready to use</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFZEcVLHD2VmC4t7m2bktYsC8FGXVNAlLVih7FHwrk2YpYQTBi9w-4FjAS0CDA81dOQ1fd1f0jtQYyIFO6iYiJL6-I29elP8YmGfNLdTdydXo6tVYsU1T7yPLx8vqRTQFT4p9KYDbI8xs0BoceLtEQnSv1K9bf5Exg1-jqiAw7nlbD7vZJhBdfYXl9/s4032/20230527_164145.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="2268" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFZEcVLHD2VmC4t7m2bktYsC8FGXVNAlLVih7FHwrk2YpYQTBi9w-4FjAS0CDA81dOQ1fd1f0jtQYyIFO6iYiJL6-I29elP8YmGfNLdTdydXo6tVYsU1T7yPLx8vqRTQFT4p9KYDbI8xs0BoceLtEQnSv1K9bf5Exg1-jqiAw7nlbD7vZJhBdfYXl9/s320/20230527_164145.jpg" width="180" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">What a fabulous colour!!! Some of these we know will be photosensitive so that's exciting. The preparation times for these is normally around 16 weeks and we are nearly at the end of that now so stay tuned and hopefully we'll have some nice colourful swatches to show you in the not too distant future.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEin6YcXpppxESI-zCCBz1792GsJV60VPD1exR11dMRYWhw_yztU7bRqm6vGwVhxc1jprEG5ZdtfKwszU0nE8R5VFPSOr-ldjTqxyXETjN-q8e8xoQNkZ5dba0eNgQ0187CvMHn3zC1kxYSJkPCRdAa9fZWaTjPHgBmtge3m9eK0CG4jKuJ4Usk_28D1/s4000/20220908_114632.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2256" data-original-width="4000" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEin6YcXpppxESI-zCCBz1792GsJV60VPD1exR11dMRYWhw_yztU7bRqm6vGwVhxc1jprEG5ZdtfKwszU0nE8R5VFPSOr-ldjTqxyXETjN-q8e8xoQNkZ5dba0eNgQ0187CvMHn3zC1kxYSJkPCRdAa9fZWaTjPHgBmtge3m9eK0CG4jKuJ4Usk_28D1/s320/20220908_114632.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p>Buzzardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00891804910073663628noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2919321743293401144.post-77090105943927527892023-02-05T08:31:00.004-08:002023-02-05T10:55:32.214-08:00Gravalax, a simple recipe.<p> If you mange to catch a salmon this is a nice way of preparing it that doesn't require cooking. What a distinctive and pretty flower it is, along with the regular members of the clover family we find here it also is edible, shoots, leaves and flowers and the seeds can be ground into flour. It's almost too pretty to eat.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjj5zsiJ0oupeXPWIppx9399rgG9McntNjb0YbWKK16JOV0zL7sC3u6Dr40ROe9FCw3_cEJ-gcyonPycjcEUA6XqPTrHlmEXcT3rD8670g4BuxPenXa_hNnrZ04-fxKYSS3hYZXcmwNr4B6rKMdEIgEBIQADBvqxdsNRoWxu2Vy_ifEaQBaMwaDjAIb/s4032/20220329_094430.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="2268" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjj5zsiJ0oupeXPWIppx9399rgG9McntNjb0YbWKK16JOV0zL7sC3u6Dr40ROe9FCw3_cEJ-gcyonPycjcEUA6XqPTrHlmEXcT3rD8670g4BuxPenXa_hNnrZ04-fxKYSS3hYZXcmwNr4B6rKMdEIgEBIQADBvqxdsNRoWxu2Vy_ifEaQBaMwaDjAIb/s320/20220329_094430.jpg" width="180" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">It is said that this plant got its striking colour when the Roman soldier who pierced Christ's side withdrew his spear and a drop of the saviours blood fell upon a white clover flower staining it blood red.</div><br /><p><br /></p>Buzzardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00891804910073663628noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2919321743293401144.post-21315167257794518942022-04-12T02:52:00.001-07:002022-04-12T02:52:36.025-07:00Oncorhynchus mykiss (blue) the Blue Trout<p> I've caught many rainbows in my time but last weekend I caught a rare genetic mutation of a rainbow trout, a Blue trout. Its said that for every 3 million trout eggs that hatch only 30 of them will be blues. The photos don't do it justice but it had the most vivid Blue back I have even seen and it's sides where the silveriest silver I've ever seen ! There was virtually no pink on it at all.</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh641EmhVq6Qc_ujZeEg1fW7w9LKyHrslqmmlcMb09sk64n7ydXwbG_7o5SzHs7NNIaj6lQgGcTSGvrTjj7Wjsg5zP46AS3QBkP8MXxv7rbBpFAHKChLqN-_gqz0c8CiQv-MuslQUvVK6zoVMLJii4xlPW-vjJZ46MlDrqvvRa7wTUyC5swIoOlhzNh/s2002/20220410_111818.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1361" data-original-width="2002" height="218" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh641EmhVq6Qc_ujZeEg1fW7w9LKyHrslqmmlcMb09sk64n7ydXwbG_7o5SzHs7NNIaj6lQgGcTSGvrTjj7Wjsg5zP46AS3QBkP8MXxv7rbBpFAHKChLqN-_gqz0c8CiQv-MuslQUvVK6zoVMLJii4xlPW-vjJZ46MlDrqvvRa7wTUyC5swIoOlhzNh/s320/20220410_111818.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /> <p></p><p>As I said the pics don't show it very well but the top is the blue the bottom one is a regular rainbow</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEip_O9RRTrRsK61_pjWGPigBRjiXqoIZuN8HmpDUVsVCXpL-UqswT9tSE9DCOwUtJwan8TzKWTmoYHfMS6hDvlbEZ8MiFE02dLZo2-sYkNKLbtBJrsxjbvBVpiWMhdzR1IZzYnhoK7TEXe8klH2lLDWorN-Kvq_coOvO82bQGHmzQyFa9AERyMsGc6p/s3506/20220410_111749_edited.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1465" data-original-width="3506" height="134" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEip_O9RRTrRsK61_pjWGPigBRjiXqoIZuN8HmpDUVsVCXpL-UqswT9tSE9DCOwUtJwan8TzKWTmoYHfMS6hDvlbEZ8MiFE02dLZo2-sYkNKLbtBJrsxjbvBVpiWMhdzR1IZzYnhoK7TEXe8klH2lLDWorN-Kvq_coOvO82bQGHmzQyFa9AERyMsGc6p/s320/20220410_111749_edited.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p>Again it's hard to make out the colouration but if you zoom in around the eyes and head the blue is very noticible.
